2008-09-11 - Mystery Fruit

Bit of a tangent here – I’ve been buying various mystery fruits recently, to see what they taste like and what I’m missing back in Oz.

Experiment one was some brown things, 3 or 4 on a skewer, each a little bigger than a golf ball. No idea what they are called, but they have been peeled and soaked in something sweet, but still taste crap.

Test #2 was a mangosteen from Luckys. Essentially the same as a small mango, but green inside and out. And crunchy. And sour. Fail.

Number 3 was a green tennis-ball sized fruit with lumpy skin. It seems to store well, as the fruit cart guys always have heaps of it at the bottom of their clear case. They peel it for you and half slice it so you can pull chunks off. The centre is full of hard little seeds, and the whole thing is quite hard and not particularly tasty.

Things were not looking good when I picked up test number 4 from Luckys – strange yellow slices of something. Turned out to be a yellow watermelon, tasting similar to regular watermelon. This one is a winner.

Luckys also supplied the mysterious red dragon fruit. This is a red-fleshed (beetroot coloured actually) version of the white dragonfruit, and as it turns out tastes pretty much the same, which is good if a little plain.

Finally, we have a close-up of the peeled pomello. This is about the size of a volleyball.
