First up is the junk food vendor – large round tray with various packets of munchies, tray carried at waist level or on the head. These are everywhere now that the water festival is here.
Next we have local snacks on a pole – side near camera contains packets of crispy puffed rice cakes and little tubes of pinkish goo; far end has boiled (hopefully) quail eggs and fried banana slices.
For the water festival, the major roads are literally wall-to-wall vendors, including the next trio - from left to right we have some sort of sweets (based around ice and coloured powders), grilled bananas (a favourite for office lunches – uses a special type of banana that is only about 10cm long - they take on a slightly salty taste) and the sugar cane juicer.
Sweet corn stall – just sells steamed sweet corn from the big silver steamer pot, which is heated in the base of the cart. 1000 riel / 25c each – much easier than cooking vegies for dinner. Mostly eaten as a snack by the locals (who I think would spend all day snacking if they could afford it).
Eggs – boiled; and with little holes cracked into them for some reason. Am staying away from this one, as a local delicacy is to eat boiled eggs with small baby chickens inside them. After that is balloons for the kiddies.
