2008-11-06 - Angkor 4 - Thommanon etc

Opposite the terraces inside Angkor Thom are a set of 16 towers and 2 small temples, with lots of other small structures behind and around them. In one of these was a feature also found at the zoo – people that latch on to you and start telling you little tour guide-type bits of information, and then ask for some money. I figure this is probably banned inside the Angkor areas, but being an outlying / less visited temple this guy gets away with it.

In between Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat on the Mini Tour are various smaller, “standalone” temples, such as:
  • Chau Say
  • Thommanon
  • Spean Thma
  • Thevoda
  • Ta Prohm
  • Banteay Kdei
  • Prasat Kravan

This entry covers the first four. I can’t really remember which photos belong with which temple – by now, temple fatigue was starting to set in.

Restored gateway and wall segment

Dead end - lots of these around

Going up - spending lots of time building big temples apparently doesn't extend to building foot-sized steps

Looking up in a tower
These ones are somewhat special as they are smooth stone on the inside too - often it's just one block sticking out over another
Unfinished / uncarved tower - looks very communist

More steep steps
