2008-11-06 - Angkor 5 - Ta Prohm

Ta Prohm is a largeish temple that has been largely left covered by trees and moss, to emulate how they all looked when first re-discovered by barangs. The effect is indeed impressive, both in terms of how they look and also how destructive the trees are.

At this point, we are in the early afternoon on day 1 of the tour – soooooooo many temples.

Even the trees need restoration

Tree eats wall

Collapsed hallway, with de-Hinduised carvings

Tree on wall

Adventurous tree roots

The way out was flooded, and locals were making a killing ferrying barang out for $1 a pop on their motos

Water was up to 40cm deep where they were riding - can't be good for the chain

Banteay Kdei temple
Using ratchet straps to hold the tower together

Base of a linga - a phallic symbol from which sacred water (poured on top and drained off at the spout) was retrieved and used to bring various benefits to the end user

An interesting thing about a lot of the statue carvings is what they do with the feet - pointed off to the right here

Small terrace overlooking a large square lake

Prasat Kravan - a small temple apparently noteable because it is made from conventional-sized bricks (although there were many more such temples found in the Rolus group - later on)

Carving into the brick, and another linga base
